Create a Data Source for MySQL in DataGrip and use SQL to query live MySQL data.

DataGrip is a database IDE that allows SQL developers to query, create, and manage databases. When paired with the CData JDBC Driver for MySQL, DataGrip can work with live MySQL data. This article shows how to establish a connection to MySQL data in DataGrip and use the table editor to load MySQL data.

Create a New Driver Definition for MySQL

The steps below describe how to create a new Data Source in DataGrip for MySQL.

  1. In DataGrip, click File -> New > Project and name the project πŸ‘ Creating a new DataGrip project.
  2. In the Database Explorer, click the plus icon () and select Driver. πŸ‘ Adding a new Driver.
  3. In the Driver tab:
    • Set Name to a user-friendly name (e.g. "CData MySQL Driver")
    • Set Driver Files to the appropriate JAR file. To add the file, click the plus (), select "Add Files," navigate to the "lib" folder in the driver's installation directory and select the JAR file (e.g. cdata.jdbc.mysql.jar).
    • Set Class to cdata.jdbc.mysql.MySQL.jar
  4. Click "Apply" then "OK" to save the Connection πŸ‘ A configured Driver (Salesforce is shown).

Configure a Connection to MySQL

  1. Once the connection is saved, click the plus (), then "Data Source" then "CData MySQL Driver" to create a new MySQL Data Source.
  2. In the new window, configure the connection to MySQL with a JDBC URL.

    Built-in Connection String Designer

    For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the MySQL JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.

     java -jar cdata.jdbc.mysql.jar
     

    Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.

    The CData Provider supports connecting to on-premises and cloud-hosted versions of MySQL such as Amazon RDS for MySQL, Google Cloud SQL for MySQL, Azure Database for MySQL, or Oracle MySQL HeatWave. The Server and Port properties must be set to a MySQL server. If IntegratedSecurity is set to false, then User and Password must be set to valid user credentials. Optionally, Database can be set to connect to a specific database. If not set, tables from all databases will be returned.

    SSH Connectivity for MySQL

    You can use SSH (Secure Shell) to authenticate with MySQL, whether the instance is hosted on-premises or in supported cloud environments. SSH authentication ensures that access is encrypted (as compared to direct network connections).

    SSH Connections to MySQL in Password Auth Mode

    To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

    • User: MySQL User name
    • Password: MySQL Password
    • Database: MySQL database name
    • Server: MySQL Server name
    • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
    • UserSSH: "true"
    • SSHAuthMode: "Password"
    • SSHPort: SSH Port number
    • SSHServer: SSH Server name
    • SSHUser: SSH User name
    • SSHPassword: SSH Password

    SSH Connections to MySQL in Public Key Auth Mode

    To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

    • User: MySQL User name
    • Password: MySQL Password
    • Database: MySQL database name
    • Server: MySQL Server name
    • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
    • UserSSH: "true"
    • SSHAuthMode: "Public_Key"
    • SSHPort: SSH Port number
    • SSHServer: SSH Server name
    • SSHUser: SSH User name
    • SSHClientCret: the path for the public key certificate file

  3. Set URL to the connection string, e.g.,
    jdbc:mysql:User=myUser;Password=myPassword;Database=NorthWind;Server=myServer;Port=3306;

At this point, you will see the data source in the Data Explorer.

Execute SQL Queries Against MySQL

To browse through the MySQL entities (available as tables) accessible through the JDBC Driver, expand the Data Source.

To execute queries, right click on any table and select "New" -> "Query Console."
