Access Live MySQL Data in Excel for the Web (Excel 365/Online) through Connect Spreadsheets

Microsoft Excel for the web represents a cloud-native iteration of Microsoft Excel. When combined with Connect Spreadsheets by CData, you gain immediate access to MySQL data directly within Excel, facilitating data analysis, collaboration, calculations, and more. This article shows how to connect to MySQL in Connect Spreadsheets and access and update live MySQL data in Excel spreadsheets online.

Configure MySQL Connectivity for Excel

Connectivity to MySQL from Excel is made possible through Connect Spreadsheets . To work with MySQL data from Excel, we start by creating and configuring a MySQL connection.

1. Log into Connect Spreadsheets, click Sources and click Add Connection 👁 Adding a Connection
   
2. Select "MySQL" from the Add Connection panel 👁 Selecting a data source
   
3. Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to MySQL.

   The CData Provider supports connecting to on-premises and cloud-hosted versions of MySQL such as Amazon RDS for MySQL, Google Cloud SQL for MySQL, Azure Database for MySQL, or Oracle MySQL HeatWave. The Server and Port properties must be set to a MySQL server. If IntegratedSecurity is set to false, then User and Password must be set to valid user credentials. Optionally, Database can be set to connect to a specific database. If not set, tables from all databases will be returned.

   SSH Connectivity for MySQL

   You can use SSH (Secure Shell) to authenticate with MySQL, whether the instance is hosted on-premises or in supported cloud environments. SSH authentication ensures that access is encrypted (as compared to direct network connections).

   SSH Connections to MySQL in Password Auth Mode

   To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

   • User: MySQL User name
   • Password: MySQL Password
   • Database: MySQL database name
   • Server: MySQL Server name
   • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
   • UserSSH: "true"
   • SSHAuthMode: "Password"
   • SSHPort: SSH Port number
   • SSHServer: SSH Server name
   • SSHUser: SSH User name
   • SSHPassword: SSH Password

   SSH Connections to MySQL in Public Key Auth Mode

   To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

   • User: MySQL User name
   • Password: MySQL Password
   • Database: MySQL database name
   • Server: MySQL Server name
   • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
   • UserSSH: "true"
   • SSHAuthMode: "Public_Key"
   • SSHPort: SSH Port number
   • SSHServer: SSH Server name
   • SSHUser: SSH User name
   • SSHClientCret: the path for the public key certificate file

Access Live MySQL Data in Excel for the web

The steps below outline connecting to Connect Spreadsheets from Excel to access live MySQL data.

1. Log into Excel, create a new sheet (or open an existing one).
2. Click Insert and click Office Add-ins. (If you have already installed the Add-In, jump to step 4.)
3. Search for Connect Spreadsheets and click "Get it now" to install the Add-in. 👁 Install the Add-In
   
4. Back in Excel, open the Data ribbon select and click the CData Connect Spreadsheets "Get Data" button. 👁 Open Add in panel

Update MySQL Data from Excel

In addition to viewing MySQL data in Excel, Connect Spreadsheets also lets you update and delete MySQL data. Begin by importing data (as described above).

1. Update any cell or cells with changes you want to push to MySQL
2. In the Connect Spreadsheets Add-In panel, select Update
3. Optionally highlight the cell(s) you wish to update and select an update option ("Update All" or "Update Selected") 👁 Executing the update (Salesforce is shown).
   
4. Click Execute to push the updates to MySQL

A notification will appear when the update is complete.
