Interact with NASA data from Google Sheets through macros, custom functions, and add-ons. The CData API Server enables connectivity to NASA data from cloud-based and mobile applications like Google Sheets. The API Server is a lightweight Web application that produces OData services for NASA.
Google Apps Script can consume these OData services in the JSON format. This article shows how to create a simple add-on that populates a Google Spreadsheet with AstronomyPictureOfDay data.
If you have not already done so, download the CData API Server. Once you have installed the API Server, follow the steps below to begin producing secure NASA OData services:
To work with NASA data from Google Sheets, we start by creating and configuring a NASA connection. Follow the steps below to configure the API Server to connect to NASA data:
Most NASA API endpoints (APOD, NeoWS, DONKI, TechTransfer) require a NASA API key. Register for a free key at https://api.nasa.gov. The default DEMO_KEY provides limited access (30 requests/hour, 50 requests/day); a registered key allows 1,000 requests/hour.
The following endpoints do not require an API key and work without authentication: EONET (Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker), EPIC (Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera), NASA Image and Video Library, and TechPort.
After obtaining your API key, set the following connection properties:
Profile=C:\profiles\NASA.apip;AuthScheme=APIKey;APIKey=YOUR_NASA_API_KEY
Once the authentication is configured, you can connect to NASA and query data from any of the available tables such as AstronomyPictureOfDay, NearEarthObjectFeed, EonetEvents, and NasaImageLibrary.

Having created a user, you are ready to create API endpoints for the NASA tables:
Having configured a connection to NASA data, created a user, and added resources to the API Server, you now have an easily accessible REST API based on the OData protocol for those resources. From the API page in API Server, you can view and copy the API Endpoints for the API:

After closing the dialog, you are prompted to allow access to the application.
You can test the script by clicking Publish -> Test as Add-On. Select the version, installation type, and spreadsheet to create a test configuration. You can then select and run the test configuration.
