The CData JDBC driver for Smartsheet is easy to integrate with Java Web applications. This article shows how to efficiently connect to Smartsheet data in Jetty by configuring the driver for connection pooling. You will configure a JNDI resource for Smartsheet in Jetty.
CData provides the easiest way to access and integrate live data from Smartsheet. Customers use CData connectivity to:
Users frequently integrate Smartsheet with analytics tools such as Tableau, Crystal Reports, and Excel. Others leverage our tools to replicate Smartsheet data to databases or data warehouses.
Follow the steps below to connect to Salesforce from Jetty.
Enable the JNDI module for your Jetty base. The following command enables JNDI from the command-line:
java -jar ../start.jar --add-to-startd=jndi
Declare the resource and its scope. Enter the required connection properties in the resource declaration. This example declares the Smartsheet data source at the level of the Web app, in WEB-INF\jetty-env.xml.
<Configure id='smartsheetdemo' class="org.eclipse.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext"> <New id="smartsheetdemo" class="org.eclipse.jetty.plus.jndi.Resource"> <Arg><Ref refid="smartsheetdemo"/></Arg> <Arg>jdbc/smartsheetdb</Arg> <Arg> <New class="cdata.jdbc.smartsheet.SmartsheetDriver"> <Set name="url">jdbc:smartsheet:</Set> <Set name="OAuthClientId">MyOauthClientId</Set> <Set name="OAuthClientSecret">MyOAuthClientSecret</Set> <Set name="CallbackURL">http://localhost:33333</Set> <Set name="InitiateOAuth">GETANDREFRESH</Set> </New> </Arg> </New> </Configure>
Smartsheet uses the OAuth authentication standard. To authenticate using OAuth, register an app to obtain the OAuthClientId, OAuthClientSecret, and CallbackURL connection properties.
However, for testing purposes you can instead use the Personal Access Token you get when you create an application; set this to the OAuthAccessToken connection property.
Configure the resource in the Web.xml:
jdbc/smartsheetdb javax.sql.DataSource Container
You can then access Smartsheet with a lookup to java:comp/env/jdbc/smartsheetdb:
InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
DataSource mysmartsheet = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/smartsheetdb");
The steps above show how to configure the driver in a simple connection pooling scenario. For more use cases and information, see the Working with Jetty JNDI chapter in the Jetty documentation.
