⇱ Helicopter crash in Mansehra kills 12 military men - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

PESHAWAR: A military helicopter crashed near Mansehra district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing all twelve on board, a military source confirmed Thursday evening.

The deceased include Major Humayun (pilot), Major Muzzammil (pilot), Major Dr Shahzad, Major Dr Atif, Major Dr Usman, Havildar Munir Abbasi (flight technician), Havildar Asif (crew chief), Naik Amir Saeed, Naik Maqbool, Sepoy Rehmatullah, Sepoy Waqar and Nursing Ammanullah.

Mansehra District Police Officer Najeebur Rehman had earlier confirmed the incident after initial reports, saying at least nine people had died as a result of the crash, while rescue teams were making efforts to recover dead bodies.

The charred corpses were burnt beyond recognition and the copter was still on fire in the evening, Rehman told AFP.

According to an ISPR official, the helicopter, which was carrying relief items and medicines to Gilgit, had taken off from Chaklala, Rawalpindi.

“There were 12 people on board, all military men. There were doctors, paramedic and aviation people in the helicopter,” a senior military official told Reuters.

He said the helicopter crashed over the mountains in the Mohar area of northern Mansehra district, adding that it appeared bad weather might have caused the crash.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani also confirmed that the crashed helicopter belonged to the army, adding that the site of the crash was a mountainous area, which could hamper rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over the helicopter crash near Mansehra.

The premier expressed his condolences over the loss of life in the incident, and commiserated with the families of the deceased on this tragic incident.

The incident is the second fatal crash involving army helicopters this year. In May, an army helicopter crashed in Naltar Valley killing seven people, including three ambassadors.

Ambassador of Philippines Domingo D Lucenario Jr, Ambassador of Norway Leif Larsen and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors were among seven people killed in the helicopter crash in Naltar Valley in the Gilgit-Baltistan region on May 8, 2015.

Take a look: Norway, Philippines envoys killed in helicopter crash, army claims no terror attack.

Earlier today, a Pakistan Air Force helicopter, engaged in relief and rescue efforts, crashed in the Khot area of upper Chitral, injuring several people.

According to sources, the helicopter was being used to conduct rescue and relief operations in the flood affected district of Chitral.

Russian Mi-17 is tough and proven helicopter. Pakistanis are either not maintaining it properly or flying it wrong. Reminds me of Fokker crash in 2006 where the plane was loaded way over capacity.

First of all our deepest condolences to the families of our army men that dies in this crash. MI-17 is a good helicopter if properly maintained and if pilots are adequately trained. The spare parts for MI-17 come from Russia where there are some companies that sell sub-standard spare parts with fake paperwork. The Army and PAF must ensure that spares for MI-17 are obtained through reliable and credible sources.

No one wants to talk about this but, this is 3rd crash in few months. One killed foreign dignitaries, second in Chitral and now this. Can we ask, not question, we are too small weak and have no right to question, the Army to at least please explain this? This seems to be either a maintenance issue or training issue. Someone dropped the ball while in uniform. This is Pakistan's national asset and we the Pakistanis are concerned.

I have high regards for our airforce and army pilots but over the last few years I have observed a lot of professional pilots posing off for photographs and videos while flying. Ofcourse these photos and videos add a lot of color to their Facebook and Whatsapp profiles but this makes them prone to misjudgments. We have seen such air crashes very often these days and not only the machinery might be outdated but also the I see a lack of professionalism from the pilots. Lots of valuable lives depend on the state of the planes and the professionalism of the pilots and I hope the administration take serious notes of such incidents and make sure they don't happen.

Innah lillah wainnah lehrajaoon. We must not completely rule-out terrorism For this mishap until we have a definite answer, especially at this early stage of investigation. The region is not fully cleared from the terrorists, who are'blood thirsty' of our army men, and will not shy away from striking back. The people must also stay vigilant at all times in spite of a success of on-going 'Zarb e Azb'.

The Russian made M-17 helicopters have surpassed their useful life and need a thorough review of their air worthiness.
