JF7-3WHSpodumene LiAlSi2O6 , Elbaite Na(Li1.5Al1.5)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH) , Lepidolite

Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 10 cm x 5 cm x 2.5 cm

Highly luminiscent blue spodumene –the only color variety without its own name– seen from the negative side of a-axis

Strong orange fluorescence with longwave UV as is common in spodumene of all colors except green (hiddenite)

The less common purple fluorescence under shortwave and red phosphorescence seem be activated by Fe3+, which would also be responsible for the uncommon blue color under white light

71V-DCDChloritoid Fe2+Al2O(SiO4)(OH)2

Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 3.8 cm x 2.9 cm x 1.0 cm
Largest Crystal Size: 36 mm

A fine cluster of several relatively large crystals of the uncommon silicate species, chloritoid. Good crystals are hard to find, and this specimen almost certainly came from one of but a few significant finds in the 1990s. Clusters are quite unusual as normally only broken singles are recovered. The largest crystal in this cluster is tabular. The luster on the complete faces is very high, and it has one good termination. Better in person, as the high luster and good form are easy to appreciate as you admire this black specimen in your hand, and move it around in the light. This is a very showy specimen, for what it is. Formerly in the miniatures collection of Herb Obodda.

8QU-UNTBeryl (Var: Aquamarine)

Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 4.9 cm x 2.3 cm x 1.5 cm

4.9 x 2.3 x 1.5 cm. A glorious, limpid, rich blue gem aquamarine crystal with a highly unusual modified pinacoid termination from Pech. This beautiful, textbook, hexagonal crystal has striking modified termination faces that are etched and frosted. Very strange pocket chemistry here. Complete all-around and pristine. One side at the base is contacted, but there is no damage, per se. Weighs 30 grams. Ex Uwe Strauss Collection.

Q07-AJ9Spodumene (Var: Kunzite) LiAlSi2O6

Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 18.5 cm x 9.5 cm x 5.4 cm

18.5 x 9.5 x 5.4 cm. This is a very well-balanced upright kunzite crystal, standing upright with just the right amount of contrasting, and anchoring, matrix. It is very sharp and gemmy, a classic for the kunzites from this region. Joe Budd photos.

FFP-PT1Spodumene (Var: Kunzite) LiAlSi2O6

Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field, Dara-e-Pech District, Kunar, Afghanistan

Dimensions: 4.8 cm x 2.8 cm x 2.3 cm
Weight: 61.4 g

Beveled square prism combination of {100}{010}{110}{111} forms, under natural light

This typical Afghan habit has the termination edge dipping crystallographically backwards so is better displayed with the negative side of a-axis toward the viewer as in this picture
