Julcani mining district, Ccochaccasa District, Angaraes Province, Huancavelica, Peru

Dimensions: 118 mm x 80 mm x 50 mm
Largest Crystal Size: 15 mm

Lustrous Tetrahedrite crystals (up to 15 mm on edge) across Quartz crystals. The tetrahedrite crystals feature a modified tetrahedral habit with beveled edges and truncated tops, and some of these crystals are surprisingly hollow; the quartz matrix contains significant pyrite. EDX analyses returned an average composition (based on 13S apfu): (Cu10.6,Zn1.99)sum=12.6(Sb3.05,As1.22)sum=4.27S13. Typical material collected in the 70-80s. Said to be from Julcani district but possibly also from Castrovirreyna District. JFC collection and photo (see child video).

Largest Crystal Size: 7 mm

Modified crystals (up to 7 mm) of dull gun-metal Tetrahedrite-(Zn) on a silicified carbonate matrix. Old specimen simply labeled “from Tunisia”. The G. Gauthier label notes it comes from the Colonel Louis Vésigné collection, yet the original label has been sadly lost… SEM-EDX analysis returned an average composition Cu6Cu4.4Zn1.8Fe0.3Ag0.2(Sb3.4As0.8)S12S (tiny traces of Hg may have been detected but this is close to the detection limits). Based on these analytical data and the morphology of the specimen, Kef/Sidi Youssef is a likely origin (Mineral. Deposita 25, 112-117 (1990)). JFC collection and photograph.
