A tall, athletic defender, he figured in his first World Cup at the age of 18 and was just 19 as Schalke forced their way into a Champions League semi-final in 2011 - losing to Manchester United. Has since seen his reputation grow, but wanting a new challenge has decided to leave Germany in the summer of 2016, to join long-time admirer Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
