Chilean welterweight boxer Alfredo Cornejo was the national champion in 1955 and 1956 and also won the title at the Latin American Championship in 1957. Cornejo represented Chile at the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires (1955) and Chicago (1959). Undoubtably his best result came at the Chicago Games when he won the gold medal with victory over Aurelio González of Argentina. The following year he competed at the 1960 Roma Olympics but lost to Ghasem Yavarkandi and was eliminated from the tournament. After the Olympics, Cornejo had a brief career as a professional, fighting in 1961 and 1962.
