Siegmar Gutzeit was a member of the East German foil fencing team, placing an unfortunate fourth at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. In 1979 and 1980, he was runner-up at the East German foil nationals, and third in 1978. With his home club SC Einheit Dresden Gutzeit won national team championships from 1975-77 and in 1979.
