Gottfried Döhn won consecutive Olympic rowing gold medals with the East German coxed eights, at the 1976 Montréal and 1980 Moskva Games. In 1973, Döhn won both the East German title and European Championships coxless fours titles. In 1975, he moved to the eights and won the East German nationals and World Championships. In 1977 and 1978 he again became world champion, but now with the coxed fours. With the coxed fours, he also won the East German national titles in 1972, 1977-78.
By profession, Döhn became an employee of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the German Democratic Republic and worked as a technical director at the embassy in Mali. After re-unification, he worked as a pharmaceutical products representative.
