Having set a world 100m backstroke record 18 days earlier, Ginny Duenkel was one of six world-record holders in the 1964 Olympic final. In a desperately close finish, she placed third behind Cathy Ferguson, the holder of the 200m world record, and France’s Kiki Caron, a former holder of the 100m record. Ginny Duenkel then went into the 400m freestyle as the American third-string. She reversed the results of the U.S. trials by taking the gold medal, but missed the world record held by her teammate, Marilyn Ramenofsky, who finished second.
