For 13 years, Henry Wittenberg was never defeated in the AAU tournament, winning all seven times he entered. Wrestling at two Olympics, he lost only one match, and he finished his career with a record of over 400 wins and only four defeats. Wittenberg was also a two-time champion at the Maccabiah Games. Wittenberg earned degrees from both CCNY and Columbia (masters) in teaching. He became a professor of physical education at CCNY after working for a while with the New York Police Department, and coached wrestling both at CCNY and Yeshiva College. He later coached the U.S. Greco-Roman team at the 1968 Olympics. As a youth, Wittenberg captained his school chess team and started out in sports as a swimmer, but turned to wrestling when he had troubles learning turns.
