Biography

Joseph was a quarter-miler for Washington University (St. Louis) and the Missouri AC. Fleming placed fourth in the 400 at the St. Louis Olympics. According to race reports, Fleming cut off George Poage in the stretch as the latter was making a move for the lead, which may have cost Poage the gold medal. Fleming also competed in two non-Olympic, or demonstration, events during the 1904 Olympics. He ran on the winning Missouri AC team in the one-mile team handicap race, and he placed second in the Western AAU Championships. Fleming later worked for the Missouri Board of Election Commissioners.

Personal Best: 400 – 50.6 (1904).
