Biography

Jelica Stanojević was a Serbian athlete who represented Yugoslavia. Stanojević competed in the javelin throw at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, finishing in 12th place. Stanojević was scheduled to run in the 4x100 metre relay but the Yugoslav team did not start the race. Stanojević was the first woman to represent Yugoslavia at the Olympics.

Stanojević later settled in the United States where she became a popular singer, often under the name Helene Stanojević. She appeared at Carnegie Hall where she sang folk songs from Russia and other nations. She eventually died in Queens, New York.
