Timo Blomqvist began his hockey career in 1975 with Jokerit Helsinki and played there until 1980. He then played one season with Reipas Lahti, before joining the Washington Capitals in 1981. Blomqvist played four seasons with the Capitals, then played one season with the Binghamton Whalers of the American Hockey League and one season with the New Jersey Devils. In 1987 Blomqvist returned to Europe and played in Sweden with MoDo Hockey (1987-90) and Malmö Redhawks (1990-93). Blomqvist then played one season in Norway with Sparta Sarpsborg, two seasons with Blues Espoo, one season in Austria with Wiener EV, before finishing his career in 1997-98 with Ahmat Hyvinkää. Internationally Blomqvist won Winter Olympic silver in 1988 and European Championships bronze in 1985. He also played with the Finnish 1989 World Championships team. After finishing his playing career Blomqvist worked as an ice hockey coach with Jokerit Helsinki and HIFK Helsinki, as their head coach in 2000-01.
