Phil Baldwin made the 1960 Olympic team just after graduating from Muskegon Heights High School in Michigan. In 1959 he won the Grand Rapids Golden Gloves title. In 1960 he won the Chicago Intercity Golden Gloves at welterweight and added the 1960 AAU crown, which qualified him for the Olympic team. Baldwin defended his AAU title in 1961. Baldwin won two easy bouts in Roma, but then lost a close quarter-final decision (3-2) to Britain’s Jim Lloyd. Baldwin later turned pro although he fought only one known bout as a pro, defeating Charley Dardeen on points in four rounds on 7 March 1962 in Detroit. Baldwin later worked as a master electrician and general contractor in Michigan.
