Takeo Yazawa was a student at the Waseda University in Tokyo when he competed in cross-country skiing in St. Moritz in 1928. He later changed his name to Hoshina and returned to the Olympic stage in 1932 in the 18 km race. He was a student at Takada High School when he won his first national championship in the 4 km cross-country in 1924. As a Waseda student, he was Japanese Champion in the 10 km individual and the 24 km relay with his university team. He repeated the relay title in 1930. After retiring from active sports he became director of the Japanese Ski Association and chairman of the Niigata Prefecture Ski Association.
