Growing up in Memphis, Garrett Hines wanted to be a pro basketball player. But his sports became football and track and he attended Southern Illinois University, where he played halfback in football, and ran the sprints in track. Hines earned a master’s degree in education in 1994, and then joined the US Army, where he started competing in the decathlon, but he also was introduced to bobsled. Hines was on the US four-man team that won a silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. Hines won six medals on the World Cup circuit, including two golds, and in 1998 was named Army Athlete of the Year.
