Format	Round-robin pools advanced teams to classification matches.

The women from the United States were the reigning Olympic volleyball champions and had not missed the podium at the Games since 2004. They had experienced less success at the World Championships, however, having made the podium only once in the past two decades by winning the 2014 edition. The two-time reigning World Champion was the Serbian team, bronze medalists at Tokyo 2020, while Brazil was the defending Olympic and World silver medalist.

Brazil won its preliminary pool decisively, as did Italy, a team that had never medaled at the Olympics and had mixed results at the World Championships, yet was perceived as being on the rise. The United States and Serbia were placed in the same group and advanced, with the Americans winning the match between the two, but both were defeated by the Chinese team, who were the 2016 Olympic champions.

China, in turn, was bested by Türkiye in the quarter-finals, a rising team that had not yet seen an Olympic or World podium. Italy, however, defeated Serbia and then Türkiye to advance to the final, where the nation claimed the gold medal by winning their match against the United States, three sets to zero. The Brazilians, meanwhile, blocked Türkiye from winning its first Olympic medal by emerging victorious in the match for bronze, three sets to one. The Italian victory was the first in Olympic volleyball for either sex.
