The favorite was Russian Yevgeniya Kanayeva who had won the 2008 European Championship. She won an easy victory in Beijing, posting the leading score on all four apparatuses in the final and winning with the most dominant performance in Olympic rhythmic gymnastics history. She led the runner-up, Belarussian Inna Zhukova, by 3.575 points, an unheard of margin in the sport. Ukraineβs Anna Bessonova, 2007 World Champion, repeated her bronze medal performance from 2004. The 2005 World Champion, Olga Kapranova of Russia, dropped the clubs twice in that routine, and placed fourth.
