Croatian Sandra Perković came to Rio as the defending champion and the favorite. She was World Champion in 2013 and runner-up in 2015, and had won four consecutive European Championships, in addition to her 2012 Olympic gold. However, in the final she got off to a rocky start, fouling on her first two throws. The early lead was taken by Frenchwoman Mélina Robert-Michon who threw 65.52 on the opening throw of the final. Perković took over the lead in round three with 69.21, which would be her only fair throw of the competition. Cuban Denia Caballero, the 2015 World Champion, responded with 65.34 in that round to move into third.

The final rounds were anti-climactic as the three leaders maintained their positions and that would be the podium. Caballero did not improve her mark, Perković fouled on all three throws, and only Robert-Michon had an improvement, throwing a national record 66.73 in round five, but it did not change the standings. Her silver medal equaled her international placements at the 2013 Worlds and the 2014 Europeans.
