The top two archers in the world since 1976 had been Americans Darrell Pace and Rick McKinney. Pace had won the 1976 Olympic gold medal and was World Champion in 1975 and 1979, while McKinney won the World title in 1977 and 1983, where he defeated Pace on the final arrow. The Los Angeles competition was not that close, as Pace took the early lead and was never headed. McKinney actually needed a 10 on his final arrow to secure the silver medal, which he did. McKinney won his third World Championship in 1985. Both Pace and McKinney competed in 1988 at Seoul, McKinney placing sixth and Pace ninth.
