The favorites in this event were defending champion Jim Lightbody and two Britons, Wyndham Halswelle and Reginald Crabbe. After the heats were settled, Paul Pilgrim was given an outside chance, based on his previous day’s performance in the 400 metres. In a very slow pace, Lightbody took the lead early and held it throughout most of the race. At 500 metres, the pack was still bunched together. Sixty yards from the finish, Pilgrim pulled up to his shoulder and displayed his speed to win the sprint by two feet. There was nobody close to them at the finish.
