The format was similar to 1964 and 1968, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. Japanβs Akinori Nakayama was the defending champion and had won this event at the 1970 World Championships. In MΓΌnchen he took the lead in the team qualifying, and held on to repeat as gold medalist, matching Soviet Armenian Albert Azaryan, who won the rings in 1956-60. At the 1970 Worlds, Japanβs Mitsuo Tsukahara had won silver and Soviet Mikhail Voronin bronze, but they reversed those positions at the Olympics in MΓΌnchen.
