The format was the same as in 1976, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, but only two gymnasts from each nation could advance to the finals. The final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. The last two World Championships had been won by Czechoslovak Věra Černa (1979) and American Marcia Frederick (1978), but neither gymnast competed in Moskva. Nadia Comăneci was the defending gold medalist and became the first gymnast to repeat in this event. She was followed by Soviet gymnasts Yelena Davydova and Nataliya Shaposhnikova.
