SM City Zamboanga: Architecture inspired by vinta, weaving and the art of the South

MANILA, Philippines โ€” SM Supermalls unveils SM City Zamboanga, its 90th mall in the Philippines, designed as an architectural expression of the culture and artistry of the Zamboanga Peninsula. The mall translates the cityโ€™s rich visual traditions into a contemporary lifestyle space where design reflects identity, heritage and movement.

Located along Mayor Vitaliano Agan Avenue in Camino Nuevo, the four level development spans about 61,000 square meters. The building rises with a modern silhouette that introduces a new architectural landmark for the city while drawing inspiration from the artistic traditions that define Zamboanga.

The design narrative begins with one of the regionโ€™s most iconic symbols, the vinta. Known for its vividly colored sails, the traditional boat represents the maritime culture of the Zamboanga Peninsula and nearby island communities. Its geometric patterns and bold color combinations have become a visual signature of the region.

Inside the mall, these motifs appear in architectural details that reinterpret the vinta into contemporary design. In the Food Court, colorful geometric patterns echo the vibrant sails of the boat, creating a dynamic dining space that celebrates movement, color and cultural identity. The design captures the spirit of the sea that has shaped trade, travel and everyday life across the region.

The influence of local craftsmanship continues across the mallโ€™s interiors. Skylit ceilings reveal geometric motifs inspired by traditional Zamboangueรฑo weaving. These patterns reference the intricate textiles produced by indigenous communities in Western Mindanao, where weaving remains an important cultural art form passed from one generation to the next.

The patterns filter daylight into the main walkways, casting subtle textures across the space and turning the ceiling into a living canvas that reflects the craftsmanship of the region.

The skylight design takes on added meaning within Zamboangaโ€™s predominantly Muslim community. As the mall opened during Eid al-Fitr, the space reflects a deeper commitment to inclusivity, recognizing and respecting the traditions and beliefs that shape the cityโ€™s identity. The architecture becomes more than visual. It creates a shared space where cultural expression is acknowledged and communities feel seen and welcomed.

The launch of SM Zamboanga aligned with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, with the mallโ€™s skylight echoing the iconic half crescent moon, a symbol of new beginnings and community spirit.

Beyond textiles, Zamboangaโ€™s visual culture also draws from centuries of artistic exchange shaped by indigenous, Malay and Spanish influences. The city is known for colorful festivals, expressive crafts and vibrant street life, all of which celebrate creativity and storytelling through design.

SM City Zamboanga channels this artistic energy into its architectural language. Wood finishes and locally sourced materials bring warmth and authenticity to the interiors, grounding the modern retail environment in the textures and craftsmanship of the region.

At the center of the mall, technology meets architecture in one of the buildingโ€™s most striking features. A scenic elevator wrapped by a 72-foot LED screen rises through the atrium, turning vertical movement into an immersive digital experience. Light, motion and visuals transform the space into a dynamic focal point that adds energy to the entire interior.

The architecture also embraces openness and natural light. Expansive glass curtain walls allow daylight to flow through the building while connecting the indoor environment with the surrounding city. The faรงadeโ€™s clean lines, warm tones and vertical fins create a strong visual identity that balances modern design with tropical functionality.

On the third level, the Sky Plaza introduces a contrasting spatial experience. Inspired by the cityโ€™s aviary concept, the indoor garden space features generous ceiling heights and an open layout designed to feel light, breathable and relaxing. The environment offers a pause from the busy rhythm of the retail floors below.

Across the entire development, the architecture emphasizes gathering, discovery and community. Wide walkways encourage movement. Open sightlines create comfort and orientation. Social spaces invite people to meet, pause and connect.

Every design element reflects the same principle. Celebrate the culture that defines the city.

Through architecture inspired by the vinta, traditional weaving, and the vibrant arts of the region, SM City Zamboanga transforms local identity into a contemporary urban landmark. The result is a space where modern design meets heritage, creating an environment that reflects the creativity and spirit of Zamboanga.
