FreeRDP 3.25 Adds Experimental AV1 Support

Written by Michael Larabel in Desktop on 23 April 2026 at 05:56 AM EDT. 7 Comments
FreeRDP as a leading open-source implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) has introduced experimental AV1 codec support.

FreeRDP 3.25 is out today and with this new release there is experimental AV1 upport when using FreeRDP-based servers. This merge last month added the extension for being able to use the AV1 codec with RDP. Encoding and decoding is done with the AOMedia library. Hardware-accelerated AV1 support doesn't appear to be yet in place.

FreeRDP 3.25 also brings support for FIDO2 redirection (MS-RDPEWA), UI improvements to the client, enhanced SDL3 client drawing performance, console output support for SDL3, Smartcard KSP support, and RDP proxy enhancements.
