Microsoft Makes "Edit" Command Line Editor Open-Source, WSL Going Open-Source Too
Microsoft kicked off its Build 2025 developer conference today with some open-source announcements.
Microsoft announced they open-sourced Edit, a new command-line text editor for Microsoft Windows. Edit is now open-source on GitHub as a Rust-written, MIT-licensed text editor geared for the Windows Terminal.
Edit is still in an early development stage but the plan is to bundle it with future WIndows releases. Edit is lightweight, supports a mouse mode, and has other features akin to the likes of Nano and Vim but with a focus on simplicity.

Microsoft also announced at Build they will be open-sourcing the GitHub Copilot in VS Code as well as making Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) open-source. It will be quite interesting to see the WSL open-source release and how it will ultimately affect the trajectory moving forward for this means of running Linux binaries atop Windows.
