Steam On Linux In April Pulled Back From Its Record High Marketshare

Steam on Linux use in March had skyrocketed to 5.33%, a 3.1% boost month-over-month and easily the highest level we've seen Steam on Linux at since its inception more than a decade ago. This record growth came amid the ongoing success of the Steam Deck handheld and Steam Play (Proton) for enabling more Windows games to run well on Linux. The April numbers are in and the Linux gaming marketshare pulled back somewhat but still remaining healthy.

The Steam Survey results were published minutes ago for April 2026. They point to Linux having a 4.52% marketshare on Steam, a drop of 0.81% compared to March. Year-over-year it's roughly double with Steam on Linux in April 2025 being at 2.27%. Or two years ago for April 2024, Steam on Linux was at 1.9%.

👁 Steam Linux marketshare

So while not as exciting as the March numbers where Steam on Linux finally surpassed the 5% market, it's still doing well relative to prior months and especially when compared to prior years.

👁 Steam Linux OSes

Steam OS Holo as what powers the Steam Deck and upcoming Steam Machine accounts for roughly 23% of the Linux gamers on Steam.

👁 Steam Linux CPU vendors

Intel on Linux gained 0.64% CPU marketshare month-over-month to now hitting 33% to AMD's 66% among Linux gamers. Under Windows, Intel is at a 55% CPU marketshare.
