AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X Offers Incredible Linux Performance
First up is a look at the video decode/encode speed for content creators with the Threadripper 3990X:
AMD Zen 2 CPUs continue performing extremely well with the dav1d AV1 decoder and even the Threadripper 3960X outperforms the dual Xeon Platinum 8280 server.
When running Intel's own SVT-AV1 video encoder, this open-source AV1 encoder was performing very well and far ahead of the Intel Core i9 or Xeon options tested. The SVT-AV1 benchmark was 30% faster with the Threadripper 3990X over the 3970X or 63% faster than the Xeon Platinum 8280s.
Moving onto ray-tracing and other renderers, the C-Ray performance was record-breaking with the Threadripper 3990X and easily blew past the dual Xeon Platinum 8280 processors.
With the Tungsten renderer, which applies its own automatic compiler flags and makes use of Intel's Embree library, the 7nm Threadripper CPUs were the easy winners.
