AMD EPYC 8004 "Siena" Shows Some Nice Linux Performance Gains Over The Past Two Years
The biggest improvement observed was in the LAMMPS HPC benchmark with a 14% improvement since launch day. The same exact hardware in use, simply using newer open-source Linux software thanks to all the upstream optimizations over the past two years from the newer Linux kernel to the newer GCC compiler with better Zen 4 support.
That 14% improvement was with no real change to the CPU power use, so it nets a win for power efficiency too.
The Memcached memory object caching system scored a nice 11% win with the up-to-date Linux software stack. Here the CPU power use was slightly higher at 132 vs. 123 Watts, but still the latest Linux software stack came out ahead in a performance-per-Watt basis.
The OpenRadioss software from Altair also was faster with this latest Linux software stack and at the same power level as the 2023 launch day.
There were a number of healthy performance gains with this December 2025 software stack for this cost-optimized AMD EPYC Siena server platform.
