The Compelling AVX-512 Performance Advantage On AMD EPYC 9005 "Turin"
With some of the HPC mini-apps like miniBUDE, AVX-512 continues to show the huge impact it has on 5th Gen EPYC performance.
We know AVX-512 can make a huge difference for some workloads but where things are interesting for Zen 5 is delivering the strong performance gains without any significant difference to CPU power use or thermals.
Similar to the prior AVX-512 benchmarks, with some workloads the AVX-512 enabled CPU power consumption is slightly lower than when AVX_512 is outright disabled. Nice seeing this happen on the retail Supermicro server and not some artifact of an AMD reference platform.
Of course, for some workloads like the Embree ray-tracing kernels the performance benefits to AVX-512 are much more muted but still measurable and consistent... For not adversely affecting thermals or power, AVX-512 with AMD Zen processors is very much worthwhile.
OpenVKL and OSPRay as part of Intel's oneAPI Rendering Toolkit continue to benefit greatly from AVX-512.
