SMT Performance Benchmarks Continue To Show Benefit With AMD Zen 5/5C
Right from the start with running Intel's OSPRay ray-tracing engine we saw clear benefits to having SMT with the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370... Significant uplift over disabling SMT and running in just the 12 core configuration with a core per thread.
Coming as a bit of a surprise, when SMT was disabled the CPU package power use was slightly higher than in the default SMT operation.
With Intel's OSPRay studio end-user software, SMT was still providing clear benefits on this AMD Zen 5 / Zen 5C laptop SoC.
The CPU package power use remained similar to slightly higher when in "nosmt", so again, it's in the interest of power efficiency to make use of SMT.
With the Embree ray-tracing kernels is also clear performance benefit to having SMT on Zen 5(C) without any added power costs.
