Linux Improvements Boost AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series Performance Since Launch
The performance impact on the newest open-source software varied for this Threadripper 7000 series workstation, but there were some very nice improvements found since launch for both performance and power efficiency.
In some instances the 64-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X was showing more significant uplift over the 32-core Threadripper 7970X, which may come down to some of the Linux kernel scalability optimizations that have landed since late 2023. As mentioned, unfortunately no longer having access to the 96-core Threadripper PRO 7995WX for seeing what the Linux performance difference there is at the top-end.
Overall the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series performance has matured quite nicely since its launch in November 2023.
When taking the geometric mean of some 64 benchmarks in this comparison, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7970X was about 4% faster with the up-to-date Ubuntu Linux release while the 64-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X enjoyed an 8.8% uplift over the original Threadripper 7000 series benchmarks from November 2023. Not bad at all and there's the possibility of more performance improvements on the horizon with the just-released GCC 15 compiler as well as the nearly-finalized Linux 6.15 kernel among other ongoing open-source software innovations.
