👁 AMD Zen 5 architecture features

AMD is talking up some very nice IPC uplift with Zen 5... Blender and other software seeing very nice gains. Even web browser benchmarks from 12~16% faster. Again, I can't wait to put Zen 5 through my full suite of benchmarks.

As previously noted, I've already ordered a Strix Point laptop for launch-day Linux testing. So stay tuned for the Ryzen AI 300 series Linux benchmarks along with Ryzen 9000 series Linux benchmarks when that later embargo expires.

AMD also reaffirmed at the event that 5th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs will be available in H2'2024 and will be in up to 192 core / 384 thread SKUs. There is also a new Trusted IO feature with a focus on confidential AI, a mix of 3nm and 4nm TSMC processes for EPYC "Turin" CPUs, and other common improvements to the Zen 5 family.

The initial members of the Ryzen 9000 series being launched this month include the Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 7 9700X, Ryzen 9 9900X, and Ryzen 9 9950X. These new Zen 5 desktop processors retain the same core counts as their predecessors. AMD isn't yet sharing the planned pricing on these new desktop processors.

AMD is reporting a 15% improvement in thermal resistance with Zen 5 desktop processors.

For those into overclocking, there are new Ryzen 9000 series overclocking improvements. JEDEC support for DDR5-5600 is also found with the Ryzen 9000 series while the AGESA supports up to DDR5-8000 speeds.

It won't be until later this year that the AMD 800 series motherboards are launching with mandatory USB 4 support on the X870/X870E chipsets and other expanded capabilities. All existing AMD AM5 motherboards will work with the Ryzen 9000 series after a BIOS update.

The initial AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors will go on sale 31 July. Stay tuned for some very exciting Linux benchmarks that I've already been working on the past month and a half with re-testing existing Intel/AMD CPUs atop a fresh Linux software stack, etc.
