Fresh Docker Linux Benchmarks For Summer 2018
In the M-Queens multi-threaded benchmark, Debian 9 and Alpine Linux 3.8 were the outliers.
CentOS 7 with its older default packages was the slowest in the Perl benchmarks.
Clear Linux and Arch Linux were doing the best at the Redis performance.
While Clear Linux continued to show off its blazing fast Python performance.
... As well as with the PHP language benchmarks.
From running a large set of benchmarks across these different Linux distributions under Docker with the Phoronix Test Suite, Clear Linux won 47% of the time while tied for second each winning 13% of the time were Ubuntu 18.04, Debian 9, and Arch Linux. Then with wins under 10% of the time was Fedora 28, Alpine Linux 3.8, and CentOS 7. To not much surprise, the slowest was CentOS 7 due to its older packages by default but proven/mature state. Obviously though when it comes to choosing an environment for Docker containers, performance should be just one aspect to consider but also the support/lifecycle, etc to keep in mind when making an educated decision.
