Intel Xeon 6780E "Sierra Forest" Linux Performance ~14% Faster Since Launch
Similar to the nice performance gains I have shown since-launch for other recent AMD and Intel processor launches, Intel Xeon 6780E Sierra Forest performance has also evolved nicely with the latest upstream improvements in the open-source world. There were many really nice performance improvements in comparing the Ubuntu 24.04 Linux state from mid-2024 at launch to now with Ubuntu 26.04 in development and the much newer kernel and GCC compiler. With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS planning for Linux 6.20~7.0 by default it will be interesting to see what more performance optimizations may still come in time for the April release.
When taking the geometric mean of all the benchmarks conducted, the updated software on this dual Intel Xeon 6780E server was around 14% faster with these Linux software updates.
Importantly as well is that the combined dual socket CPU power consumption on average was just slightly higher (~1%) and no difference to the peak CPU power consumption while also spending more time in the lowest power states.
