Well, that's how the open-source Nouveau driver performance with Mesa 17.0 and Linux 4.10 compares to the official NVIDIA Linux proprietary driver for Maxwell GPUs. In the Maxwell family, the GeForce GTX 750 series remain the best bet due to not being restricted by signed firmware requirements found on the GTX 900 series and being able to re-clock these cards. But if not trying to go for a Maxwell card, the GTX 600/700 Kepler cards remain the best option for those wanting to use Nouveau as that's where currently the best re-clocking -- but still only manual, static re-clocking is currently supported -- can be found with this unofficial open-source driver.
