AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series vs. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Open-Source Linux Performance For 2025

With vkpeak as synthetic Vulkan benchmarks for testing peak performance of different primitives, Nouveau can perform quite well relative to the official NVIDIA Linux packaged graphics driver stack.

For VkResample, the RTX 5090 on Nouveau/NVK performs rather well and came out faster than the GeForce RTX 5080 rather than where it typically performed around the RTX 5070 on the R580 driver. But the NVIDIA proprietary Vulkan driver seems to struggle in this particular case with the Radeon RX 9070 series performing not far behind the GeForce RTX 5090 on the R580 driver.

And for a bit of OpenGL coverage, the demanding Unigine Superposition benchmark. Nouveau/NVK with the GeForce RTX 50 series ends up using the Zink OpenGL-on-Vulkan driver performance. Here again the GeForce RTX 5090 performance on that fully open-source driver stack roughly correlates to the GeForce RTX 5070 level of performance when using the NVIDIA R580 Linux driver.
