Ubuntu 26.04 With GNOME 50 Offering Some Performance Benefits For NVIDIA Linux Gaming

The RTX 5090 did see some slight performance upside on Ubuntu 26.04 with the Unigine OpenGL benchmarks.

The GPUScore: Breaking Limit benchmark also saw some faint gains for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 when moving to Ubuntu 26.04.

Within open-source Linux-native games there were more occurrences of the GeForce RTX 5090 performing faster on Ubuntu 26.04 compared to Ubuntu 25.10. But the GeForce RTX 5080 performance was unchanged in these tests.

Across the various Linux graphics/gaming benchmarks conducted with the NVIDIA R590 stable driver and on the same AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D desktop, Ubuntu 26.04 (daily) in place of Ubuntu 25.10 provided around 4% better performance on a geo mean basis. However, the GeForce RTX 5080 saw its performance largely unchanged when going from Ubuntu 25.10 to Ubuntu 26.04.

Aside from the performance, Ubuntu 26.04 with the GNOME 50 desktop was working out well in my NVIDIA Linux testing thus far. Similar AMD Radeon tests between Ubuntu 25.10 and the near-final Ubuntu 26.04 state are to be conducted shortly.
