Biography
Neville was born in 1820. He was the son of Henry Chamberlain.
Military Career
He had a lengthy and distinguished military career in India. In fact, his being denied entry into Afghanistan started the Second Anglo-Afghan War in November of 1878.[1]
Neville entered the Indian Army in 1837, rising to the rank of General by 1877. He served throughout the Afghan War (1839-1842) where he was wounded six times. He was wounded in action a number of times including at the capture of Delhi and during the Umbeyla campaign. Important posts he held included:
- with the Body Guard of the Governor General, at the Battle of Maharajhpore in 1843
- Military Secretary to the Government of Punjab in 1852
- Brigadeer-General of Punjab Frontier Force in 1854 and the Expeditionary Forces against Frontier Tribes and again in 1858 as Comdt. of PFF.
- Adj.-Gen. of the Indian Army in 1857;
- was Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army from 1876-1881
- deputed on a mission to the Ameer, Shere Ali, of Afghanistan in 1878
- was sometime Acting Military Member of Council of the Governor-General of India[2]
Family
He married Charlotte Cuyler Reid on June 26, 1873 in Saint James,Paddington,London,England.[3]
Death
He passed away in 1902.[4] He was buried in St John the Evangelist Chuchyard in Rownhams, Hampshire, England.[5]
