Dell had a few notable Alienware announcements at CES 26, including the Alienware 16X Aurora and the Area-51. Now, I've got a mostly fully loaded Area-51 here that's being tested, but I've also got a new Alienware that was missing from CES 26.

That's the Alienware 15, which is new ground for the company, in that it's firmly aimed at the budget end of the gaming laptop market. It's about time more gamers could afford the Alienware name, and now they can.

Until now, Alienware has always been for the higher echelons of gamers, with the flagship CPUs and GPUs inside. The Alienware 15 is the first to come with only mid-range components. It's still just as cohesive as the flagship, but built for a new generation of gamers that no longer have to suffer with another brand until they can afford the Alienware they've been pining after.

About this article: Dell sent XDA a pre-production unit of the Alienware 15 for a first look. It had no input on the contents of this article, but there's no benchmarking or comments on performance/battery life based on my usage of the device.

It's every bit an Alienware

Quirky design choices abound

Even without the glowing alien logo on the lid, this is unmistakably Alienware. The company has pulled design cues from its flagship models here with its new AW30 styling, such as the inward rake on the lid and front to make it easier to open the screen, and a hinge design for strength and stability.

Sure, this time around it's inside polycarbonate resin instead of aluminum on the flagships, but that's fine. This is not the creaky plastic you'd associate with a budget laptop; it's every bit as solid as the metals and feels great under the hands.

The cryo-chamber cooling, which keeps the mid-tier hardware cool, has been custom-designed for this laptop, as Alienware does for every model, to deliver peak performance at all times. I know I can't talk benchmarks, but it keeps the keyboard nice and cool under the hands, even under heavy loads, which is all you can ask for in a laptop cooling system.

👁 alienware 16 area 51 review11
Alienware's 16 Area-51 is the weirdest gaming laptop I've ever used, and I wouldn't have it any other way

The Alienware 16 Area-51 is a bold, unique gaming laptop that pushes boundaries and delivers plenty of power, despite a few stumbles along the way.

It's actually comfortable to game on

It might look edgy, but it has comfortably rounded corners

Alienware devices are always designed with gaming habits in mind, and the first nod here is that most of the ports are on the left edge — away from most people's mousing hand. The keyboard might not have the deep travel of the mechanical keys on the Area 51 flagship, but you don't need that for gaming; all you need is a nicely spaced keyboard with good-feeling keys, and that's what the Alienware 15 has.

Plus, it's contoured for long gaming sessions. Big bonus points to Dell for doing this, I've lost track of the number of laptops that I've found difficult to type on long-term because they sacrifice user comfort for looks. Here, the palm rest is nicely rounded, as are the other sides, so you don't get the deck digging into your wrist while gaming. Bliss.

👁 Dell XPS-3
Dell listened and the XPS 14 is back, baby, yeah

One of the most storied names in the game is back

It's the most affordable laptop Alienware has ever made

Gamers can get their hands on a great gaming laptop that's budget-friendly

Alienware made a promise at CES 2026: to bring gaming to more gamers, everywhere. That means more affordable QD-OLED monitors and more affordable gaming laptops. The current most affordable model is the Alienware 16 Aurora, which starts at an MSRP of $ 1,689.99, with specs very similar to those of the $1,349 Intel-based Alienware 15. In some ways, the 15 is better, with a higher display refresh rate for smoother gaming.

I've got the flagship Alineware 16 Area-51 here as well, and both feel solidly constructed. Sure, the flagship has flashy RGB sections, more cooling fans, and better components, but let's not forget it's $4,400. That's three times the cost of the Alienware 15, underscoring how strong a value proposition this new budget gaming laptop really is.

👁 Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Pro
Affordable gaming laptops are a thing of the past, so you should get a Steam Deck instead

Good, affordable gaming laptops are a dying breed and require enough sacrifices in specs, you'd be better off with Steam Deck.

I look forward to benchmarking a production-ready Alienware 15

Look, Alienware 15 doesn't have anything you can't already get elsewhere. But that's not the point. The point is that now you can get it from Alienware, with everything that brand stands for. Great cooling systems, a penchant for performance, and a quirky laptop chassis that nobody will mistake for another manufacturer.
