Summary

  • Apple has refreshed the MacBook Pro with its M5 Pro/M5 Max chip, N1 wireless chip, Wi‑Fi 7, and a 2× faster SSD.
  • The MacBook Air gets the M5 chip, alongside 16GB RAM, 512GB base storage, and 2x SSD speed.
  • Prices have increased across both the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lineup.

Apple has revealed a refreshed MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, alongside a refreshed MacBook Air featuring the M5 chip. The new Macs will be available for pre-order starting March 4th and land in stores and online on March 11th.

The more powerful version of Apple's MacBook Pro is available in 14-inch and 16-inch versions, just like in years past. The new M5 Pro chip features a CPU with 15 or 18 cores and 16 or 20 GPU cores. The M5 Max features 18 CPU cores alongside either 32 or 40 GPU cores. Regarding RAM, the base M5 Pro features either 24GB or 48GB of RAM and starts at 1TB of storage, up from 512GB in the previous version of the laptop.

It's important to note that Apple has increased the cost of its entire MacBook Pro lineup. For example, the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro previously started at $1,600 but is now priced at $1,700, an increase of $100. On the plus side, at least you're getting 1TB of storage now. The same goes for the M5 Pro and Max versions of the laptop, which now start at $2,200 instead of $2,000 for the 14-inch model, and $2,700 instead of $2,500 for the 16-inch version, a price jump of $200.

Beyond the move to the M5 Pro and M5 Pro Max, the refreshed MacBook Pro also includes Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Apple also says that the new laptop features "2x faster SSD performance." MacBook Pro colors include Space Black and Silver.

It's a little odd for Apple to be releasing the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro this late in its typical silicon cycle, especially given that the M5 MacBook Pro was announced back in October 2025.

Alongside the M5 Pro and Max MacBook Pro, Apple has also revealed its refreshed M5 MacBook Air. Unfortunately, just like the MacBook Pro, the 13-inch MacBook Air's price has been raised to $1,100 from $1,000, marking a $100 increase. Apple says that the M5 MacBook Air is capable of four times faster AI performance compared to the M4 MacBook Air, and when pitted against the M1 MacBook Air, you get 9.5 times faster performance.

On the M5 side, your options are a 10 core CPU and 8 core GPU, or a 10-core CPU and 10 core GPU. Base storage has increased to 512GB from 256GB on the M4 MacBook Air. Additionally, Apple says the laptop's SSD has "2x faster read/write performance" than the M4 version. RAM starts at 16GB and now offers 135GB/s of bandwidth, which Apple says is a 28% increase over the M4 MacBook Air.
