Following years of rumors, Apple has finally refreshed its 5K monitors, including both the 27-inch 5K Studio Display XDR and Studio Display.
With the Studio Display XDR, the key upgrades are Mini-LED backlighting with 2,304 dimming zones, which offers improved contrast and black levels, and an adaptive refresh rate that can shift from 47Hz to 120Hz when connected to an M4 Mac or an M5 iPad Pro. It's unclear whether other devices will be able to take advantage of the adaptive refresh rate, let alone higher refresh rates. Given the original Studio Display XDR's and Studio Displays' limited compatibility with Windows 11, I wouldn't count on it.
Unfortunately, the standard Studio Display still only features a 60Hz panel, which is a bit wild for a high-end monitor releasing in 2026, though to be fair, it is a 5K panel. The upstream port on both monitors has been increased to 140W charging, allowing you to fast charge up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Both monitors feature a 5,120 x 2880-pixel resolution, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera that now supports Desk View (hopefully, there's also a quality improvement over the previous camera), three microphones, six-speaker built-in audio, two Thunderbolt 5 ports, and two USB-C ports.
While the pricey Studio Display XDR seems like a decent update, there doesn't seem to be really anything notably upgraded with the standard Studio Display. Pre-orders for the Studio Display XDR and Studio Display begin on March 4th, with shipping starting on March 11th. The Studio Display XDR costs $3,300, and the Studio Display costs $1,600.
Earlier this week, Apple also revealed the M5 Pro and Max MacBook Pro, the M5 MacBook Air, the M4 iPad Air, and the iPhone 17e.
