Capcom has been in God tier form since they hit their stride towards the end of the 2010s with Monster Hunter World. Since then, Capcom has been on an extraordinary winning streak, releasing titles like Resident Evil 2, 3, & 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6 to critical acclaim. But the last title, SF6, got the masses' attention, as fighting games are what the company is truly known for.
So, with the release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, to even more acclaim, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 on the way, it should be no surprise to anyone that the fighting game OGs are looking to bring more to modern gamers. And in a new interview, that plan seems to be exactly what Capcom wants to accomplish.
Capcom did the unthinkable and updated this beloved fighting collection
Capcom has updated this fighting game collection, and it could be a sign of good things to come.
Capcom wants more retro fighting classics on modern hardware
During an interview with Famitsu, Shuhei Matsumoto, series producer for both Street Fighter and Capcom Fighting Collection, spoke about the company's desire to keep digging in the company's iconic righting game vault. Matsumoto used Capcom Fighting Collection 2 as an example, explaining how the game came about. He stated that the team had a desire to bring forth fan-favorite fighters, who had previously been identified by Capcom's surveys, asking fans what games they would like to see returned.
The producer also stated that the relationship with SNK, nurtured by the inclusion of Terry and Mai in Street Fighter 6, was the gateway to including games like Capcom vs SNK: Mark of the Millennium 2001. And because the first CFC and the Marvel vs Capcom collection were both successful, the team has begun looking to the future, with potentially more classic fighting games on the horizon, especially with the popularity of online tournaments and exposure.
"Each title is still popular, and I'm very happy that it is still being played at game centers. However, if you want to hold a tournament or play with friends, it's difficult to do so. You have to gather at a game center or buy old hardware," Matsumoto told the outlet. "Nowadays, online battles have become the norm. Our top priority for this series was to create an online environment so that people can continue to play for a long time to come. Also, since Street Fighter 6, there have been more opportunities for streamers and live streamers to play. I think it's very important to have a good online battle function."
“Capcom still has many fighting games and there are many titles that cannot be played on current consoles. We would like to provide an environment where players can play as much as possible while listening to the voices of our players.”
Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is set to release on May 16th, 2025, and continues the effort to bring forth more classics to modern hardware. The collection is set to include Capcom games that haven't seen the light of day in decades.
