Remote work has become permanent for many professionals, and it's not going anywhere. However, working remotely comes with many challenges, especially when it comes to productivity. Fortunately, Windows 11 and 10 come with some amazing settings and built-in features that will keep you away from distractions and make you more productive.

If you are a Windows user, here's how you can boost your productivity while working away from the office.

10 Windows Snap Layouts

Effortlessly manage your workspace

Snap Layouts is a Windows 11 exclusive feature that's a game-changer if your work involves opening multiple screens simultaneously. It lets you arrange multiple app windows on your laptop or monitor's screen so that you can switch to any of them quickly and simultaneously keep an eye on other screens as well. For example, if you like to take notes while attending a video conference, Snap Assist lets you systematically arrange the app windows so that you can switch to any of them as per your preference.

Here's how you can use Snap Layouts:

  • Drag a window to the edge of your screen, and it will automatically snap into place.
  • You can also use keyboard shortcuts, such as Windows key + Left/Right/Up/Down Arrow, to snap windows to the left, right, up, or bottom side of the screen.
  • For more precision, hover over the Maximize button (the square icon at the top right of the window) and choose a snap layout. You can also use the Windows + Z keyboard shortcut.

9 Voice Typing

Type hands-free with Windows Voice Typing

If you are tired or too lazy to type or just want to speed up your workflow, Windows Voice Typing is the feature you should use. It's an underrated tool that comes pre-built on Windows and uses AI to accurately transcribe your speech into text. I've found it particularly useful for drafting emails, taking notes, or even writing articles like this one. It also helps me reduce the strain and wrists on my hands on busy days. If your keyboard stops working on Windows, Voice Typing could be your rescuer.

How to use Voice Typing:

  1. Open the app or document where you want to type.
  2. Press the Windows key + H to activate Voice Typing.
  3. Start speaking, and Windows will transcribe your words in real-time.
  4. Use voice commands like "delete that" or "new line" to edit your text without touching the keyboard.

8 Clock's Focus Sessions

Stay on track with Focus Sessions

When working from home, one of the main causes of productivity loss is unnecessary distractions. For such scenarios, Windows's Clock app has a feature known as Focus Sessions. It helps you stay focused on your tasks by breaking them into parts. It's based on the Pomodoro Technique, which I've found incredibly effective in maintaining focus. Focus Sessions help you maintain a healthy work rhythm, prevent burnout, and keep you productive throughout the day.

Here's how you can use it:

  1. Search for the "Clock" in the search box and click its icon to launch it.
  2. Navigate to the Focus Sessions section on the left.
  3. Set a timer for your work session (for example, 30 minutes) and an optional break duration (for example, five minutes).
  4. The app will remind you to take breaks and track your progress over time.

From its settings, you can adjust many more options, such as Focus Periods, End of session sound, End of break sound, and more. You can also link the Spotify app and listen to music or podcasts to enhance your focus. It also integrates with Microsoft To Do.

7 Virtual Desktops

Create separate workspaces for different tasks

Virtual Desktop is one of my favorite Windows features when working remotely. It helps me stay organized by creating multiple desktops for each task. For example, I can have one desktop for emails and meetings, another for focused work, and a third for entertainment or casual browsing.

Here's how to use Virtual Desktops:

  1. Press the Windows key + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Click New Desktop at the bottom of the screen next to your current desktop to create a new virtual desktop.
  3. Switch between desktops by pressing the Windows key + Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow.
  4. You can also drag and drop apps between desktops for better organization.

You can launch separate apps on each of the virtual desktops you create. It's like having multiple monitors without actually adding separate hardware. There's no limit on the number of desktops you can create.

6 Cloud Clipboard

Copy and paste across devices seamlessly

You'll find the cloud Clipboard feature pretty useful if you work across multiple devices. It lets you copy texts on one device and paste them on another if both devices are signed in to the same Microsoft account. I've used this feature countless times to transfer links and notes between my laptop and desktop.

Here's how you can use it, too:

  1. On your Windows system, navigate to Settings -> System -> Clipboard.
  2. If Clipboard History and Clipboard History Across Your Devices are currently off, toggle the button next to them to enable them.
  3. You can choose whether to automatically sync the text or manually do that.
  4. Now, copy texts as usual (Ctrl + C).
  5. Press the Windows key + V to open the Clipboard history and access your copied items.
  6. Paste the item on another device by pressing the Windows key + V and selecting it from the history.

5 PowerToys

Supercharge your Windows experience with PowerToys

PowerToys is not a single app but a package of several amazing tools that every power user will find useful. It's a completely free app that is regularly updated under Microsoft's watch. I've been using it for a long time, and it has completely transformed the way I work on Windows. From advanced window management to custom keyboard shortcuts and mouse utilities, PowerToys has a lot of features that can boost your productivity. There's something for everyone.

To utilize PowerToys, follow these steps:

  1. Download and install PowerToys either from the Microsoft Store or from Microsoft's official GitHub page.
  2. Explore tools like FancyZones (for advanced window snapping), PowerToys Run (a quick app launcher), Awake (to prevent Sleep Mode), Text Extractor (to extract text from images), Keyboard Manager (to remap keys), and many more
  3. Customize the settings to suit your workflow.

4 Remote Desktop

Access your work computer from anywhere.

While working away from the office, you might sometimes need to access your office computer for urgent work. In such situations, Windows Remote Desktop will help you. If your office Windows computer is of any other edition than Windows Home, you can control it from any Windows, Android, or iOS device.

It's super easy to set up Remote Desktop. It's secure, fast, and pretty reliable, considering Microsoft officially provides it. For Android and iOS, you need to install the Windows App (previously Remote Desktop) to access a PC remotely.

3 Quick Assist

Get or provide remote support effortlessly

Quick Assist is similar to Windows Remote Desktop, but generally used for remote control of a PC to perform troubleshooting. So, let's say you encounter an issue that you cannot resolve while working remotely; you can have it fixed by an IT expert through Quick Assist.

Unlike Windows Remote Desktop, Quick Assist works on every edition, including Windows Home.

Follow these steps to use Quick Assist:

  1. Open Quick Assist by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. Choose either Get assistance or Give assistance.
  3. Share the security code with the other person to establish a connection.

2 Automate Repetitive Tasks

Save time with automation tools

Repetitive tasks can take up a lot of your time, but Windows offers tools to automate them. To automate tasks on your Windows PC, you can utilize the built-in Windows Task Scheduler, PowerShell scripts, or third-party tools like AutoHotkey and TinyTask. Automation frees up your time for more important tasks, making you more efficient and less prone to errors.
