The PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalogs expanded earlier this week with October's new additions. Every month, Sony brings new retro, PS4, and PS5 first-party and third-party games to its subscription service, but October's batch of games may be one of the best of the year.
Silent Hill 2 and Until Dawn's high-profile PS5 remakes are both hitting the service ahead of Halloween. Meanwhile, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and some other games I love have also made their way to the PS Plus Premium and Extra game catalog.
With eight new games to choose from, you may be struggling to decide which new PS Plus Premium or Extra game you should play first. I'm here to help by sharing my personal ranking of October's additions, which should help you make an informed decision about which games to play first.
8 Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1
Available on PS4 and PS5
Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1 is one of those jumpscare-filled horror games that have previously gone viral on platforms like YouTube or Twitch. In this game's case, players are hunted by a horrifying fuzzy creature as they explore a dimly lit horror game family.
If you're looking for some quick but still startling scares this Halloween, then you may want to give Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1 a shot. I'm not a fan of this style of horror game, though, which is why I ranked it low in this strong month for horror game additions.

7 Wizard with a Gun
Available on PS5
Everything you need to know about this game is right there in the title. What more could you want? In all honesty, this is an enjoyable, if unassuming, indie game all about running and gunning through levels with increasingly ridiculous guns. It supports co-op, too.
If you're looking for a new co-op game to play with friends on PS Plus and enjoy an entertaining isometric action game, then you will certainly have a good time with Wizard with a Gun. It's just not as interesting as many of the other games to hit the subscription service this month.

6 Until Dawn's remake
Available on PS5
Last year, Ballistic Moon and PlayStation Studios released a remake of the PS4 horror game Until Dawn. It gave the game an Unreal Engine 5 visual overhaul and shifted the gameplay perspective from fixed cameras to an over-the-shoulder camera. While Until Dawn is one of my favorite horror games, and I think everyone should play through it at least once, I can't fully recommend this remake.
The same great story and performances at this game's core are here, but I think the graphical upgrade and camera perspective change actually remove much of the style the PS4 original oozed. If you don't mind graphics that aren't Unreal Engine 5 fidelity and fixed cameras, then you're better off playing the 2015 version of Until Dawn. Thankfully, it's also part of the PS Plus Extra catalog.

5 As Dusk Falls
Available on PS4 or PS5
As Dusk Falls is one of the more experimental games that Xbox Game Studios has published in recent memory. It's a narrative adventure game about a motel robbery gone wrong and its impact on the lives of the families involved. It's presented in a unique way, functioning more like a motion comic than a fluid 2D animation.
It's a gripping crime drama that left an impact on me when I first tried it out in 2022, and one that fans of choice-driven narrative games should play. While you're waiting in between episodes for the newer narrative adventure game Dispatch, you may want to consider playing through As Dusk Falls.

4 Tekken 3
Available on PS4 or PS5 to PS Plus Premium subscribers
Each month, retro PS1 or PS2 games make their way to the catalog exclusively for PS Plus Premium subscribers. This month, that title is the iconic fighting game Tekken 3. In my eyes, this game for the original PlayStation is what truly cemented Tekken 3 as one of the kings of the fighting game genre.
While certainly not as smooth to go back and play as something like Tekken 3, I think it still holds up. Fans of fighting games should download this emulated version of Tekken 3 and at least play a couple of matches. It will give you a deeper appreciation for Tekken as a series and how far the fighting game genre has come since 1998.

3 V Rising
Available on PS5
It can be very hard for a new survival game to stand out nowadays, but V Rising does not have that problem. This game, which plays from an isometric perspective like Diablo, fully leans into the fact that players control a vampire. It also features some impressive castle base-building, consistently giving me a reason to keep going out to gather resources.
As far as survival games go, this is one of my favorites in recent memory. It's also very fitting to play it around Halloween. As such, I have no qualms recommending that PS Plus Extra subscribers try V Rising if it interests them. Maybe even consider picking up the Castlevania DLC for good measure.

2 Silent Hill 2's remake
Available on PS5
Silent Hill 2 is one of the most iconic horror games ever made, and Bloober Team's 2024 remake of it is fantastic. It follows a man named James Sunderland as he's dragged to the titular fog-ridden town, seemingly outside of reality. There, he faces horrific creatures like Pyramid Head, direct manifestations of what James is feeling after the death of his wife.
Silent Hill 2 follows in the footsteps of Resident Evil 2 and Until Dawn's remakes, swapping fixed cameras for a third-person perspective. It works surprisingly well for this remake though, as it feels like a very distinct and new interpretation of a certified classic. It's a must-play around Halloween if you're a PS Plus subscriber.

1 Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Available on PS4 and PS5
While Silent Hill 2's remake is great and worth playing this Halloween, Yakuza: Like a Dragon takes the top spot because it's one of my favorite games of the decade. This game took Sega's iconic Yakuza action game series and soft-rebooted it as a turn-based RPG with a realistic (if still extremely wacky) edge to it.
I played this game when it released in 2020, and quickly fell in love with it quirky cast of characters. Protagonist Ichiban Kasuga, in particular, is one of my favorite video game characters ever. This is a wonderful game, and I'm PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers now have an easy way to try it.

October's PS Plus games prioritize quality over quantity
While some previous months have had bigger game lineups, every game getting added to the subscription service this month is worth playing. I may like some more than others, but you honestly can't go wrong with anything added to the PS Plus Premium or Extra catalog in October. Hopefully, November can offer up an equally impressive lineup.
