Summary
- Microsoft has raised Surface prices across its lineup — some models jumped about $500 in the Microsoft Store.
- Memory makers prioritizing AI data centers are driving costs up.
- Mid-range Surface models now cost more than flagship models when they first launched.
Microsoft has confirmed Surface PC prices have increased in the Microsoft Store, with third-party retailers following shortly.
The tech giant's mid-range and flagship Surface devices are now notably more expensive than before, with the flagship Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro surging by $500 over their 2024 launch prices (via Windows Central). These price increases come amid the ongoing RAM shortage spurred by memory suppliers like Micron, Samsung, and Sk hynix focusing their efforts on AI tech giant data centers, limiting the supply considerably.
Several other PC manufacturers, including Dell, Asus, and Acer, have already raised PC prices, so it was only a matter of time before Microsoft hiked the cost of its Surface line. The shortage has hit nearly every area of the tech industry, with Valve pushing back the release of its Steam Machine and video game console prices increasing.
Regarding Surface price increases, the 12-inch Surface Pro previously started at $800 but has now been pushed up to $1,050. On the other hand, the 13-inch Surface Pro, which launched at $1,000, now costs $1,500. Additionally, the base 13-inch Surface Laptop, which now costs $900, starts at $1,150, while the $1,000 13.8-inch Surface Laptop now costs $1,500. Lastly, the 14-inch Surface Laptop is priced at $1,600.
In a statement to XDA, Microsoft said the following regarding the Surface line's across-the-board price increase:
Due to recent increases in memory and component costs, Surface is updating pricing on Microsoft.com for its currentgeneration hardware portfolio. We remain committed to delivering value to customers and partners while upholding our standards for quality and innovation.

Mid-range Surface devices now cost more than top-tier models did at launch
The RAM crisis continues to rage on
To put the price increases in perspective, several mid-range Surface devices now cost more than some flagship models did in 2024. When you draw a comparison to some of Apple's laptops, things look even more dire in some cases. For example, Apple's base 13-inch MacBook Air is now $400 cheaper than the Surface Laptop 7.
Below are the new starting prices for several devices in Microsoft's Surface lineup:
- 13-inch Surface Pro —$1,500 for Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
- 12-inch Surface Pro —$1,050 for Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, 256GB UFS
- 13-inch Surface Laptop —$1,200 for Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD
- 13.8-inch Surface Laptop $1,500 for Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
- 15-inch Surface Laptop - $1,600 for Snapdragon X Elite, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD
It's unclear what this means for Microsoft's upcoming refreshed 2026 Surface line, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw these already high prices pushed up even further. Hopefully, this price hike is Microsoft preparing consumers for the cost of its upcoming Surface devices, rather than just a step up the price ladder to an even higher cost.
Microsoft's next Surface refresh is expected to be announced at some point between April and June 2026.
