Summary

  • Nintendo might increase the Switch 2's price in 2026 amid global memory shortages.
  • Sony has reportedly delayed the PlayStation 6's release to 2028-29 as rising RAM costs squeeze supply chains.
  • Nintendo recently stated that it doesn't have plans to increase the Switch 2's price.

It looks like Nintendo's Switch 2 might soon cost more.

According to a new Bloomberg report, the Switch 2 is the next victim of the ongoing rampocalypse. Speaking to "people familiar with its plans," the often-reliable publication says that Nintendo is "contemplating" raising the price of the Switch 2 in 2026.

The report also notes that Sony is considering 2028/2029 for the release of the PlayStation 6 due to soaring memory costs. This backs up a report from late December that cites a similar 2029/2030 release window for the PS6 and Microsoft's next Xbox console.

Below is an excerpt from Bloomberg's reporting surrounding the Switch 2's price hike and the PS6's release being pushed back:

Close rival Nintendo Co., which contributed to the surplus demand in 2025 after its new Switch 2 console drove storage card purchases, is also contemplating raising the price of that device in 2026, people familiar with its plans said. Sony and Nintendo representatives didn't respond to requests for comment.

The Japanese gaming giant recently denied a price hike is coming

In the U.S., the switch will likely cost in the $500 range

During the Q&A portion of the company's recent earnings call, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told shareholders that the company has no current plans to increase the Switch 2's $450 price. However, it now seems inevitable that a price hike will occur, and that it's just a matter of when. It's unclear how much more the Switch 2 will cost after the price increase, but I'd guess we're looking at a $500-$550 price tag.

While the Switch 2 features an older

Nvidia Tegra T239 system-on-chip, the handheld isn't immune to the increased cost of components due to the memory shortage currently slamming the tech industry. With this in mind, if you've been thinking about picking up a Switch 2, now might be a good time to pull the trigger ahead of an impending price hike. As of December 31st, 2025, Nintendo has sold 17.37 million Switch 2 units since its release on June 5th, 2025.

Over the past several months, the price of RAM has increased significantly, with the industry's largest manufacturers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, and others, allocating the bulk of their resources to AI companies (Micron even closed its consumer-focused Crucial brand entirely in favor of focusing on enterprise-only businesses).
